This was my complaint about it too. Probably millions of people, globally, have received puberty blockers and cross sex hormones over the past 28 years since the Dutch study was published. If we’re funding anything at this point, it should be longitudinal research on them.
1. Lots of treatments that we already use are continually studied. Just because someone’s studying the effect of ibuprofen on liver disease (or whatever) doesn’t mean it’s a scandal that ibuprofen is already available.
2. The issue with youth transgender treatment is that there’s potential harm either way - doing nothing and letting puberty happen is irreversible, and if you believe transgenderism is a thing, that’s harmful. You can’t just point to problems with any given treatment to conclude that that treatment is bad (all treatments have dangers), you have to take the benefits into consideration to.
This type of argument is like “my body my choice!” It’s not grappling with the actual arguments the other side has.
Pretty sure this was a massive waste of resources, but it did prove once again that a mammal given cross-sex hormones does not change sex but becomes a mammal with a f*&%*d up endocrine system
No such thing as turning humans transgender, our chromosomes, reproductive systems & pelvises (to name but 3 - check out that Adam's 🍏 & prostate!) do not change with identity any more than do our biologies. No one will know in future who chose to live as woman, pelvises determine corpse genders now.
I think the (qualified) dismissal is special pleading. Transgender people claim that hormone treatment is changing their gender. So on those terms the experiments are on “transgender mice”. There is no consistent position from which to both support the transgender concept while also claiming no transgender mice research was funded.
It was a play on words, omg. Lol. "Money spent on transgender research using mice.= Money spent on transgender mice. How are you a journalist when you can't understand how people speak?
Those don't mean the same thing, and nobody understands them to mean the same thing. Nobody understood the speech that way, which is why one side thought it was laughable waste and the other side thought it was laughably untrue.
Which side thought it was a "laughable waste" and which side thought it was "laughably untrue? Both of those seem like they would be from, the same side. So, are you being deliberately obtuse or are you just illiterate?
The pro-Trump side took the claim to be true and took the spending to be laughably obvious waste.
The anti-Trump side took the claim to be laughably false.
Both sides interpreted the claim in the same way. If everyone understood the claim in the way you say, then we wouldn't be talking about it. We're talking about it, because it's a sensational claim.
Do you think if they had said “research into the safety profile of transgender treatment hormones using mice” that it would’ve been interpreted as so silly as to be outrageous? To me, that sounds totally reasonable, while the way the White House actually phrased it sounds ridiculous.
Which phrasing is more accurate and precise? If it’s mine, why did Trump use the silly-sounding one that’s less accurate and less precise?
I think that your "bootlicking" comment is not respectful. You seem to be using it in a derogatory way. Furthermore, you are also applying it to a context which would not even fit the meaning of bootlicking, which further makes me think you are just trying to insult someone.
Stop wasting the taxpayers money with the transgender mice! If the government wants to piss away cash on mice, study why the little rodents break into my garage and gnaw on my cars ignition wires and go to sleep in the heater blower compartment (then croak).
I just love the fact checks that use unlikely interpretations, dubious claims, and ridiculous qualifiers to arrive at the conclusion they want to be true.
If the experiments are meant to explore the safety of utilizing ‘gender affirming care’ for humans in the context of making the humans transgender, then the experiments are conducted in the vein of ‘transgender experiments’ on mice, monkeys, etc.
As well, hasn’t there been much data on the side of animal research being unnecessarily cruel and also not very useful?
Don’t you think you’re splitting hairs?
And all the talk of the science being lacking is rather disingenuous, isn’t it? A dearth of valid scientific studies backing the success of transgender ‘medicine’ in treating gender dysphoria does not equate to a lack of valid scientific studies on the effects of transgender medicine.
Those quality studies that do exist do not support the efficacy or safety of gender affirming care.
Torturing animals and children further with studies on puberty blockers, cross sex hormones, and cosmetic surgeries is not a constructive or ethical pursuit:
some "edge" science is needed. but what were talking about is a huge waste.
"Senator Al Franken"
dems attention to trumps words on this issue are a welcome development. with just a little added effort maybe now dems will figure out that their own policies are based on 100s of fraudulent claims that were spoon fed to them by gender activists and lobbyists and as a result dems are harming women, kids, gays, ppl with psych issues, orphans and others to benefit white men who pretend to be marginalized but aren't and at the behest of activists whose main goal is to rob kids of their right to puberty and life long health and rob women of their right to safety and fairness.
"Where are the calls on the right for more research into gender-transition treatment?"
every gov systematic review on earth already determined gender transition meds don't help kids gender dysphoria, mental health or anything else. nothing. zero. zilch. zip. no benefit. these reviews represent the highest form of evidence and checked the claims of 100s of studies. gender affirming "care" doesn't work. its a scam. we know that now. gender kooks and quacks like wpath and johanna olson-kennedy did their own reviews in attempt to find any evidence gender "care" helps. their reviews found gender "care" doesnt help. as a result, in typical crazy activist fashion they didnt publish their findings and continued to harm vulnerable people by claiming gender "care" helps even while knowing their quack medicine doesnt work. this is criminal. the belief that gender "care" helps is a religion and a cult. its like a religion because there's no evidence gender "care" helps, yet dems continue to believe it in a religious way. except theres no religion on earth that lies to kids and pushes them into sterilizing quackery. its like a cult because the victims of this "care" (the people Ben calls "trans") are lured to it with cult like propaganda and methods, misinformation and false claims of benefit.
claims gender affirming "care" helps arent based on evidence. theyre based on wild claims and the simple opinion of quacks who are getting rich harming vulnerable ppl, as per UK medical group BMJ report "gender dysphoria in young people is rising".
trump doesnt need to be 100% correct in his terms. bringing the issue up in any context just underscores how dems are harming women, kids and others and helping no one by falling for a huge scam based on 1000 bogus gender activist claims that dems fell for and continue to promote.
Tangentially, but in the same vein, there are about 100 studies on the safety of mifepristone, the abortion medication, and all but a few show it to be safe. It's been investigated for over 20 years in multiple countries. Two of the few negative results were retracted by the Journal for being poorly done and highly biased. In spite of all this, the anti-abortion folks are determined to ignore all science and get the FDA to heavily control it. This is going to very negatively affect hundreds of thousands of women every year. I think that is a big deal.
becuase democrats placed abortion rights and economic fairness on the back burner and are instead championing a mens rights movement promoted by rich white men , dems are setting womens rights back 400 years by allowing men to invade their spaces and promoting the homophobic sterilization of kids, gays and others via gender policies based on fraud.
i dont agree with gop anti abortion views. i believe to families and woman should have right to plan their families. preventing ppl from being able to plan their families goes against nature and harms families. but if dems cant get elected they cant protect this right. and by championing mens rights that gender policies represent, they lessen their ability to win elections. also. tho it may sound cynical, people still have access to abortions. they usually can go to another state, if nothing else. but kids who are tricked into gender meds via dem affirmation policies are forever robbed of their right to puberty and life long health.
Thank you. Science can be messy and ideological for sure. I agree that the gender affirming care under age 18 is a big mistake. But it does affect very few people, whereas the anti abortion legislation is getting worse and worse and will/ does affect hundreds of thousands every year. Going to another state can mean 700 miles. And North Dakota is trying to pass a law that will put the woman in jail if she travels to another state.
I'm wondering what you meant by Democrats placing abortion rights on back burner? And what is men's rights campaign?
i agree that abortion affects a lot of people. on the other hand, if you look at a population map of the US, many red states are comparatively empty. but yes, point taken these anti abortion laws are affecting a potentially alot of people. to me, abortion issue is like the guns rights issues. it just seems stuck. i guess i shouldnt have said dems placed abortion rights on the back burner. because it was really their main issue. what i ment to say is that by promoting the unpopular policies with gender belief system, dems harm their chances of getting elected which in a way prioritizes gender policies at the expense of other priorities. gender policies include allowing men in womens bathrooms, allowing men to cheat at womens sports, allowing men to rob womens school opportunities, harming vulnerable people by promoting a quack intervention that causes life long harm due to gender meds. democrats knew these policies are wildly unpopular. and so do the activists who tricked dems into them. the article
details how gender activists get their policies enacted. its not by being honest and giving accurate information about what they are doing. their premise from the start is that people wont like men invading womens spaces or sterilizing kids, so they avoid being honest about their intensions.
imo, gender policies have the potential to affect even more people. allowing men to invade womens spaces robs women of their safety, that directly affects half the planet endangering women world wide, setting womens rights back 400 years to a time thats too awful to mention. in 2021, 43000 US kids reported gender dysphoria. this # is increasing every year as dems sell kids and other vulnerable people that self identifying as a life long medical patient solves every normal issue. blue states literally tell kids in school that puberty is optional and when kids have normal teen issues blue state teacher tell kids they maybe trans. there is zero evidence any of this helps anyone.
but even more than that, these policies are deeply unpopular. becuase they are implemented without many knowing, people feel extreme offence when they find out. the unpopular of gender policies has the potential to elect right wing governments world wide. democrats have declared war on women, kids, gays, ppl with psych issues and others. all these groups are severely harmed by dems gender policies. who are promoting these policies? white men. white men are seeking access to womens spaces. white men are seeking the right to sterilize kids. white men seek to limit free speech by forcing everyone to refer to them as women. gender policies promote mens rights and rob the rights of others. they rob kids right to puberty and life long health. they rob gays right to experience dysphoria and be gender non conforming without homophobes lying to them telling them they were born in the wrong body which causes severe life long harm and is the most homophobic thing of all time. they rob women right to safety and fairness. and for what? every gender claim is a lie. all based on meaningless online polls and quack opinion. UCLA williams puts out stats that trans ID people are at risk and have safety concerns. turns out its all just online surveys of guys whose hobby is wearing womens clothing. its not based on police records or anything like that. white men are the most privileged and safe people in our society. they are not at risk or marginalized in any way. they are almost never in any danger. all claims of gender activists are lies. every gov systematic review on earth found gender meds dont help anyone. not even one person .
Thank you. I will still say that anti abortion laws affect way more people, but I do see your point about how the gender claims are affecting many too.
I'll disagree politically - while it's true that so far as we know, mice don't suffer the clinical condition of gender identity disorder - the physical changes being induced in part in these mice are the same as those being induced in people.
But, I 100% agree this science is not silly and should be supported by partisans on both sides. Whatever we think attempts to transform physically, they're taking place, and as described, these studies are researching the physical effects of such treatments, which is, it seems to me, valid scientific exercises with possible benefits for real people, and for illuminating a contentious social issue.
When I heard those characterizations of the research I did chuckle, but I also had a concern: It's pretty easy to make a lot of basic science sound ridiculous and wasteful if one is motivated to do it. And this is exactly the kind of necessary science that private companies may be either unmotivated to do or, at worst, interested in suppressing.
This is not to pass judgement on the quality of any of these particular studies. I don't know anything about that. Just a general point about basic science in general that, to some degree, is in the public interest and needs public funding to get done. Could there be improvements in the process and granting mechanisms? Absolutely. Just like there could be improvements in making the fruits of research more publicly available without paywalls. But we must tread lightly when seeing reports of basic science that sound ridiculous. Maybe it is ridiculous! But to find that out we need to do more than hear a politically-motivated characterization of it.
Nobody's perfect. I'm not judging the guy's worthiness to get into heaven, I'm simply pointing out that, here and now, he's damping down a bit of hysteria and that's integrity.
I just pointing out that whereas I know nothing about this guy's use of pronouns, I do know he wrote a very fine article above. There may be a thousand reasons in other aspects of his life to denounce him, I make no comment. But they are not relevant to the article above. Your comment changed the subject from trans-mice to pronouns and I'm just bringing it back to what he wrote. It is typical of Colin that, rather than weaponize this trans-mice thing, he rather throws cold water on it. That, too, is integrity.
This brings up the idea that research paid for by companies is usually considered biased. So which is it? Less biased research paid for by the government or possibly very biased research paid for by companies?
You can have them pay whomever is going to do the research, that will be presumably unbiased. I don’t care. But, the company needs to take care of the costs. Charge them directly, if you like.
Researchers will aim to be unbiased, but even so, human nature will lead to possible biases. Most will fight against it, but there will always be that concern. Government funded research has led to most of our advanced and is very good to do.

Benjamin — If researchers inject a female mouse with male hormones, and the mouse proceeds to display male traits or behaviors, isn’t it reasonable to refer to it as transgender or, perhaps, transsexual?
Not bad, at the same time, claiming that gender is a thing, especially for children, especially for young children, makes you suspicious.
Care to explain how you determine the gender of a 5 yrs old boy scientifically?
Where in the article does he claim children can have a gender identity? Are you referring to some of his other writings?
https://substack.com/@benryan
Read through this.
If anything, a quick statement that children do not, in fact, have a "gender" would do.
That has not happened, so we will assume the worse, of course🥰
NOW we have to fund these experiments to prove the harms to children?! After the harms to children have been widely done?
You could make this argument if these studies had been done before the kids were harmed. But now we don’t need mice. We have children to show us.
How is this not clear?
This was my complaint about it too. Probably millions of people, globally, have received puberty blockers and cross sex hormones over the past 28 years since the Dutch study was published. If we’re funding anything at this point, it should be longitudinal research on them.
This is too simplistic.

It was absolutely meant to be disrespectful, as it's an implicit defense of some nerdy idiot that rules the Amerimutt Empire, for now.
I appreciate the civil dialogue of your reply.
Me too!
I am highly educated in civil discourse and own a few PhDs in Internet conversation techniques. Not to be humble!
Derogatory in contrast to the dignified way one might lick a boot.

It is typical of Colin that, rather than weaponize this trans-mice thing, he rather throws cold water on it. That, too, is integrity.
The guys got to make a living OK? hes got a liberal arts degree so that means he shouldnt have to work too hard.
The companies making the drugs need to pay for these studies. If govt wants to lower taxes for these companies to make it more feasible, then do so.
Ergo, charge the companies for the work.
i agree that abortion affects way more people. on the other hand, if you look at a population map of the US, the red states are comparatively empty. but yes, point taken these anti abortion laws are affecting a potentially alot of people. i guess i shouldnt have said dems placed abortion rights on the back burner. because it was really their main issue. what i ment to say is that by promoting the unpopular policies with gender belief system, dems harm their chances of getting elected which in a way prioritizes gender policies at the expense of other priorities. gender policies include allowing men in womens bathrooms, allowing men to cheat at womens sports, allowing men to rob womens school opportunities, harming vulnerable people by promoting a quack intervention that causes life long harm due to gender meds. democrats knew these policies are wildly unpopular. and so do the activists who tricked dems into them. the article
https://www.spectator.co.uk/article/the-document-that-reveals-the-remarkable-tactics-of-trans-lobbyists/
details how gender activists get their policies enacted. its not by being honest and giving accurate information about what they are doing. their premise from the start is that people wont like men invading womens spaces or sterilizing kids, so they avoid being honest about their intensions.
imo, gender policies have the potential to affect even more people. allowing men to invade womens spaces robs women of their safety, that directly affects half the planet endangering women world wide, setting womens rights back 400 years to a time thats too awful to mention. in 2021, 43000 US kids reported gender dysphoria. this # is increasing every year as dems sell kids and other vulnerable people that self identifying as a life long medical patient solves every normal issue. blue states literally tell kids in school that puberty is optional and when kids have normal teen issues blue state teacher tell kids they maybe trans. there is zero evidence any of this helps anyone.
but even more than that, these policies are deeply unpopular. becuase they are implemented without many knowing, people feel extreme offence when they find out. the unpopular of gender policies has the potential to elect right wing governments world wide. democracy have declared war on women, kids, gays, ppl with psych issues and others. all these groups are severely harmed by dems gender policies. who are promoting these policies? white men. white men are seeking access to womens spaces. white men are seeking the right to sterilize kids. white men seek to limit free speech by forcing everyone to refer to them as women. gender policies promote mens rights and rob the rights of others. they rob kids right to puberty and life long health. they rob gays right to experience dysphoria and be gender non conforming without homophobes lying to them telling them they were born in the wrong body which causes severe life long harm. they rob womend right to safety and fairness. and for what? every gender claim is a lie. all based on meaningless online polls and quack opinion. UCLA williams puts out stats that trans ID people are at risk and have safety concerns. turns out its just online surveys of guys whose hobby is wearing womens clothing. its not based on police records or anything like that. white men are the most privileged and safe people in our society. they are not at risk or marginalized in any way. they are almost never in any danger. all claims of gender activists are lied. every gov systematic review on earth found gender meds dont help anyone. not even one person
